Back-end
development
Programming for e-commerce and database information
and management.
Browser
The front-end to a database that enables users to view
and access information.
Bezier
A sinuous, curvy line defined by adjustable control
points. Bit: The smallest measured unit of computer data.
Bitmap
An image on the computer screen that is visible by pixels
directly related to the data bits stored in the memory.
Compression
Reducing visual and audio data for storage and transmission.
Cycle
A group of images that comprise a complete action by the
subject. During a cycle the subject starts and ends in the
same position. For this reason, the same action can be repeated
over and over without redrawing. Cycles can be constructed
for walking, running and jumping motions, gestures of the
hands or whole body, or facial expressions.
DHTML
Dynamic Hyper Text Markup Language File Management: An essential
system that ensures proper allocation of all graphics files
within a web site design.
Dither
Combining pixels from 256-color palette into patterns that
approximate other colors. At a distance, the human eye merges
the pixels into a single color. Up close, the graphic image
will appear pixilated and speckled.
Download
Transferring data from one computer to another. DPI- Dots
Per Inch: Measurement uses for image resolution, the number
of dots(pixels) that constitute an image.
.EPS
Encapsulated PostScript. A format for storing object-oriented
vector artwork. Can also store bitmaps, but seldom used
because of large storage requirements.
Front-end
graphics
The visible part of a computer program or database program
that the user will see visually and interact with.
.GIF
Graphic Interface Format. A format for saving solid color,
images. Not ideal for photographs or illustrations.
GML
general markup language
GUI
graphical user interface
HTML
Hyper Text Markup Language is the programming code used
to create web pages.
Hyperlink
a programmed link between items of information in different
segments of a program or physically different locations.
Hypertext
describes a program that provides multiple pathways through
text, enabling the user to follow existing hyperlinks in
a random access manner.
In-between
or Tween
An image drawn to show a character between the extreme moments
of action or gesture. Tweens create smooth motion between
keyframes where the action is most dramatic.
Interactive
Computer based system or program that allows the user to
interact directly and maintain control will desired actions.
Java
Script
A scripting language developed by Netscape to translate
HTML source code for web authors to enable them to create
interactive web sites.
.JPEG
Joint Photographic Experts Group. A compression technique
for reducing the amount of data needed to describe a full-color
bit map.
Keyframe
An individual image exhibiting the extreme of an action
or gesture. Used as a guide for the construction of intermediate
frames.
Link
A direct path that connects two web sites together.
Onionskin
The name is taken from the translucency of onionskin paper...
This technique originates in traditional cell animation.
By drawing on a translucent medium, with a light source
beneath the drawing surface, an animator can see the position
of an object on one page, while drawing it in a new position
on the page above.
.PDF
Portable Document Format.
Pixel
The smallest unit of measurement on a computer screen. Screens
with more pixels provide a higher resolution image.
Posterize
A technique for converting a bitmapped image to a smaller
number of tones and colors.
Programming
Editor
A computer program which is designed to help the user write
and edit programs in a particular programming language.
PPP
driver
Point to Point Protocol
RAM
Random Access Memory: temporary working data storage
RGB
Red, Green and Blue: The colors system used in computer
graphics.
Rollover
A technique where when mousing over a button, text or image,
it changes to something new.
Scripting
Programming using a computer scripting language.
Splice
To cut images for web site graphics.
Storyboard
A series of sketches in sequence, describing the proposed
motion graphics via animation, film or video.
Tables
A presentation of information defined by a grid structure
and organized in rows and columns.
Tags
A sequence of characters in a markup language used to provide
information, such as formatting specifications, about a
document.
TCP/IP
Transfer Control Protocol/Internet Protocol Transparent
Gif A gif that has no background color.
.TIFF
or .TIF
Tagged Image File Format. A format for storing gray-scale
data, not object-oriented images; the standard format for
scanned images and for exporting gray-scale and color images
to other programs. There are three types: Monochrome TIFF,
Gray-scale TIFF, and Color TIFF.
URL
Uniform resource locator File Formats: Defined structure
for storing file information. Various formats are used to
transmit between computer programs.
